Design brief

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is the Australian Government agency responsible for the efficient management and sustainable use of Commonwealth fish resources.

AFMA approached Digital Garden to redesign and rebuild its two public websites, AFMA and PZJA, on Drupal. Run in two phases, Digital Garden conducted a UX discovery phase and a redesign and development phase.

UX discovery

UX discovery

Multiple workshops and research sessions were performed to gather information about stakeholders on the site, resulting in a set of key deliverables including a tested and revised information architecture, usability test report and functional specification.

Digital Garden ran a number of usability tests with different user types, discovering problem areas on the website. These issues were addressed by proposing a new streamlined IA and running a codesign workshop to conceptualise page layout and design.

Component based redesign

Component based redesign

Digital Garden wireframed and designed the new AFMA and PZJA sites to share a set of common components. These were built on accessibility principles and formed a set of consistent and reusable elements.

The design follows AFMA and PZJA’s branding, with PZJA featuring traditional custodian design elements

Multisite development on Drupal

Multisite development on Drupal

The AFMA and PZJA websites have been built on Drupal using a multisite strategy. The Drupal domains module has been implemented that allows two websites to sit on one CMS instance. Content editors and approvers have access to one website or both, depending on their level of authority over the websites.

The websites have been developed and tested in accordance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Results

The outcome from this project are two sites that are research backed and tested to create a streamlined user experience.

Several new features have been added across the site that make it easier for AFMA and PZJA users to complete their work and keep Australia’s fisheries sustainable and managed efficiently.
